Nanterre : MAE ‐ Bibliothèque d’archéologie et des sciences de l’Antiquité

The Bibliothèque d’archéologie et de sciences de l’Antiquité is a non-circulating collection of books and other publications relating to archaeology, specialized disciplines, and subfields of study. It focuses on acquiring, organizing, and preserving monographs and periodicals of advanced level to cover the needs of an academic and graduate student public, and is committed to developing partnerships and networks in documentary resources and competences. As such it has been involved since 1997 in the Frantiq network.

The library opened in 1997. Its aim was to integrate and consolidate the collections of several smaller libraries of the CNRS, of the University Paris-Nanterre Department of classics, and of the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.

It holds 50000 monographs,1450 periodicals (420 currently received) et 12000 off-prints.

The Bibliothèque d’archéologie is open all year round to university academic staff, CNRS researchers, and graduate students. Access is given after registration at the desk with a valid faculty card or student card. For students in the third year of the Bachelor's degree a letter of recommendation is required. External readers may be granted library access upon an interview with a librarian, to determine the legitimacy of their research needs.

  • Medieval archaeology (up to the year 1000 c.e.)


The library has benefitted from the donation or acquisition of important collections such as the libraries of Jacques Tixier, Gilbert Charles-Picard, René Ginouvès and Lilly Kahil, Jean Perrot, Javier Teixidor, Jean-Claude Gardin, Geneviève Dollfus, Claude Lepelley, Jean Bottéro, the Institut d’Art et d’Archéologie library (Ancient Near Eastern studies collection), Damien Agut, Pierre Briant...
